Where is Your God Now?

It is no secret that our world today is consumed with evil.

Just turn on the news for more than two minutes and you will see headlines that scream brokenness, sadness, despair, hopelessness.

In a time when there are more mass shootings, acts of terror, and tragedies than ever before, it may appear as if evil is winning.

And it is no wonder why people always ask Christians during these times the age old question, “Where is your God now?”

“If there really is a God, why do bad things happen?”

“Why didn’t He stop the evil from happening?”

The truth is, nobody has the full answer to these hard questions. I struggle to answer whenever I am asked this very question. Because I don’t know. I don’t know why evil is so prominent in our world. I don’t know why innocent people can walk into a school, a movie theater, a concert venue, a school for disabled people and never live to walk back out…

I don’t understand the evil in this world. It is incomprehensible.

But I will tell you what I do know.

I know My God is good.

Amidst the terror of mass shootings, He is good.

Amidst the despair of broken families & broken hearts, He is good.

Amidst the anxiety and fear and paralyzing worry, He is good.

When evil seems to overcome and take over, and countless innocent people are wounded and killed in senseless acts of violence, He is good…still.

And you may ask, “How? How could a GOOD God allow such evil? If he is really all powerful, why doesn’t He stop it?”

I’ve asked God this question before many times with no clear answer. Until this morning when I was watching the news. My heart aching and breaking over the tragedy in San Bernardino. I once more asked God,

“Why don’t you do something about this?”

And ever so gently, the Spirit spoke directly to my questioning heart.

“I already did.”

And I realized then that God didn’t stop others from killing His one and only son that sorrowful day 2000 years ago. He doesn’t stop evil because He allows us to make our own choices through the gift of FREE WILL. We are only able to CHOOSE good if we also have the ability to choose evil. Sadly, a lot of people do choose evil. And that is very evident in our broken and fallen world.

When you turn on the news today, yes…I agree it appears as if the Evil One is victorious. But do not be deceived, dear one.

I realized this morning that it has always “appeared” as if Evil has won.

On that day 2000 years ago, where our Precious Savior was sacrificed on the cross, it certainly appeared as if evil had won. Oh, but it certainly did not.

Jesus rose again 3 days later and CONQUERED evil once and for all. The battle is already won. IT IS FINISHED.

So yes, I believe God’s heart breaks for this world. He is looking down on us with a heart full of sorrow saying, “This is never how it should have been.”

Genesis 6:6 reads, “His heart was filled with pain.”

God’s heart FILLS.

His heart breaks with those who are mourning the loss of loved ones after the shooting in San Bernardino. He is right there holding the weeping mothers, fathers, children, siblings.

But He did not AUTHOR this suffering. God is good and only authors good, beautiful, perfect things.

God’s heart breaks today just as much as it broke the day He allowed His perfect sinless son die a painful death on the cross.

But He is also trying to speak gently to this broken world…

“The battle has already been won for you”

“This pain will not last forever”

“Evil will NEVER win. Not on my watch.”

Revelation 21:4 reads, “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain. For the old order of things has passed away. And He who sits on the throne says, Behold, I am making all things new.”

He is still on the throne, friends.

His promises still hold true.

We live in a fallen and broken world. Sin and evil are rampant.

But our God is stronger still.

The battle has already been won. 2000 years ago when Jesus Christ died on the cross.

Come to Him and rest in His promises for us.

He is our Mighty Warrior, and He NEVER fails.

Praise. Him.
